Software : 3ds Max
Category : 3d Modeling, Wire Parameters, Expression Controllers
Description : This is a tutorial that i have tuned into a video from a PDF written by Theo Calvin and Omer Barr. Using wire parameters and expression controllers we will make a panel that opens and closes based on the distance of a point.

awesome, i thought this would not be possible in max without scripting.

would it be possible to attach these components to nonplanar quadrilateral faces of a nurbssurface?

    thx

I try to use something like Patch Deform or SurfDeform to do that. It’s a bit finicky though.

great tutorial dave_but there’s portions of this i can’t catch in the video. the expression controller doesn’t seem to attach itself / register on the character…the distance value remains locked at 1, despite where the point moves. i’ve looked all over the web for the PDF you mention, but haven’t come up with anything.

i’ve downloaded the ‘twoattractors’ scene from andrew payne’s website and looked at / used the expressions he used, but still no reaction.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

i figured out the issues with the expression controller….the point wasn’t within range (my meshes were 10x larger than your tutorial, so a range of 500 had to be VERY close) so the distance always read 1.

is there a way to get an inverse reaction? the scene from andrew payne’s website has it opening, rather than closing, based on proximity….ie the default is to remain open rather than closed. there’s no difference in the expression controller language between tutorials, so i’m stuck.

again, any help would be appreciated.

    dave,

attended your class at au. thought it was great.

can you control rotations this way without the ‘character’ feature? i have the other version of max and i cant seem to get a simple rotation to work?

    thanks.

    David,

Your site is amazing and a great initiative to bringing more technology into architecture. I did the tutorial but I wonder how can you do wireparameters with several points so they don’t override each other. Lets say you have a grid of 3d components and you want to generate a wave effect on 4 different zones. Thanks, Ben

works great, but would you know if I can use an “if” statement in order to limit the transformation incremental: my client wants to do 6 different panel variations max, so can I revise the formula in order to jump between range values? Know what I mean?

    thanks for the great tuts!

duh, sorry, it is of course well covered in the 3ds max help: of course I can use an “if” function and operators (=>)in the expression.
