3ds Max Lattice Modifier

Modifier : Mirror
Works on: Meshes, Polys, Nurbs
3ds Max Description The Lattice modifier converts the segments or edges of a shape or object into cylindrical struts with optional joint polyhedra at the vertices. Use this either to create renderable structural geometry based on the mesh topology, or as an alternate method to achieve a rendered wireframe effect.

My 2 Cents :I tend to use the lattice modifier more for rendering than for modeling. My problem with the Lattice modifier for modeling is there is very little control of the results. You have the option of turning every vertex into a geodesic sphere or every segment into an N sided tube. Either can be displayed individually or together. It is also possible to change the radius of both objects. I usually go about achieving a more controlled version of this modifier by extracting selected edges and then using a either a combination on extrude and shell or a sweep modifier. By extracting the edges in pieces I can then control rotation and size of sections of the model individually. This is not always as seamless as I would like due to the rotation of the extracted segments, therefore I tend to go with the extrude method because I can control the direction of growth a bit better.
