Modifier : Face Extrude
Works on: Shapes, Meshes, Polys
3ds Max Description : The Face Extrude modifier extrudes faces along their normals, creating new faces along the sides of the extrusion that connect the extruded faces to their object. As with most modifiers, this affects the current face selection passed up the stack. There are various differences between the Face Extrude modifier and the Face Extrude function in an editable mesh, especially the fact that all parameters in the Face Extrude modifier are animatable.
My 2 Cents :The Face Extrude Modifier is used to procedurally extrude a selected sub-object face of an Editable mesh or Poly. This procedure is one that has pretty much become obsolete with the addition of the animate mode within an editable Poly. One of the drawbacks is the lack of units. Face Extrude however does work well when you want a single surface from a closed poly line. This can also be achieved by using an edit mesh or edit poly modifier but I’ll use Face extrude sometimes to easily distinguish it in the modifier stack.

At a certain point, if you add loads of verts to the spline (for instance, making a map), the extrude modifier no longer makes the top and bottom polys. I’ve also tried the shell modifier to do it, still doesen’t work.
Help.
i also try to do somthing like you but i can’t help
You need to make sure you do not have duplicate verticies. I’ll try and make a video explaining this
hi can anyone help me, i am learning to use 3d 2010 for college. but i am learning by myself and the manual ive got is 2008. on one of my creations i need to extrude several polgons along their normals. however everything i try makes them extrude up instead of along. i am so stuck. how do i highlight several polys and extrude them sideways. if you have any ideas please mail me at secretslipper.22@hotmail.co.uk. thanks. x
