3ds Max - Surface Modifier

Modifier : Surface
Works on: Splines

3ds Max Description : The Surface modifier generates a patch surface based on the contours of a spline network. A patch is created wherever the segments of the interwoven splines form a three- or four-sided polygon. The Surface modifier and the CrossSection modifier, taken together, are referred to as Surface Tools. They allow you to create complex or organic surfaces, like the fuselage of a plane, or a three-dimensional character.

My 2 Cents : Since I model with splines I tend to use the surface modifier often. This modifier is also useful when importing splines from other CAD applications such as Rhino or Autocad. Working with clean curves then applying a surface give you more control as well as cleaner geometry.

Hi Dave, it’d be neat to have a “part 2″ to this tutorial, showing how you can use the surface modifier to create topography. A lot of folks might not know how easy it is to use splines as level curves and cross section them to get a spline cage ready to be surfaced.

    Hi Dave,

First of all, thank you very much for the wonderful tutorials. I’ve not found anywhere else on the internet resources of similar quality and content.

With respect to the above, I’ve modelled a surface in Rhino and I’d like to bring it into Max to modify. But I’m having issues creating surfaces quickly in Max with the imported Rhino curves. The curves are imported but have huge amounts of vertices on them. What I’d hope is if you could show how the above is done.

    Thanks in advance!
