Software : Rhino 3d and Grasshopper (Explicit History)
Level : Beginner
Description : In this Rhino / Grasshopper video tutorial we rebuild the shift tutorial provided by David Rutten on the Grasshopper blog. I hope to do one of these per file David has posted up.  As simple as the interface is to understand when one comes at the software for the first time this can be a bit overwhelming.  I just want to help make the dissection process as simple as possible . Please have a look in the forum for more Grasshopper files and images.

Topics Covered
-Divide curve by Number
-XForms
-Using the Shift component

I got a question while I was following your instruction.
When I set the point for the circle, it set not as a reference but as a vector position.
So when I move the point, the circle doesn’t move as well as the point.

    How can I fix it???????????????

    Dave,

Once you figure out the issue, could you post the solution in this forum since I am having the same issue as kim.

    Thanks.

    Hey,

I have that problem too, and i also can’t see points.
For example if I divide the circle I cant see the crosses where it’s divided.
If I go on and put the lines between the points the lines show up like they should.

when you guys make the circle in the grasshopper are you using a point at the origin for the circle. Make sure you are using the correct circle component.

    Hey Dave,

Yeah, I first place a point and use that as origin just like you do in the tutorial, and also use the correct circle, have no idea whats wrong.
I’ll show a screenshot and the definition file in the forum.

    Thanks!

I think that’s kinda error at the new version of grasshopper.
I prefer to make a point by the grasshopper now,
and link some slidebars to move the point.

Thanks for you great tutorials. I am not that familiar with Rhino, and I can’t seen to make the green (or red) X’s appear when I divide a curve. The curve is divided, however, there is no graphic to visualize the number of divisions.

    question:
after you divide the two circles with the divide curve tool and use the line tool, why does grasshopper make a vertical line to connect the points that are directly below it?

why doesn’t it just make an array of lines that connects one point from the top circle to every point on the bottom circle?

is this just how the program is set up, or am i just really really confused?

    Hi Dave:
I have a question about how can I create a conncetion between the grasshopper and the other tool. I am trying to use the real time temperature to change the shape which designed in grasshopper. I know how to get the data of the temperature in real time use audrino, but how can I input the data which changes continuely to grasshopper? Is there anyway that the slider can be moved not by you but by the real time data collected outside rhino???
    Thanks a lot!

This right now i think is a bit tricky. I don’t think it will be long before you can do this through VB.

Works when I do it exactly like in your video, but when I set multiple points for the circle center, some lines connect to the child circle, some connect to the next created object’s child circle. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks for the help provided, but I have a doubt: after the tutorial I tried to loft the curves provided, but it worked for all the segmente but one. How can i make it working smooth?

Thanks however, it was easy! Just looking through loft options, and everything worked fine!
