Dave, I’ve been trying to use Backburner at work but I cannot get the Backburner servers to see each other, any ideas? They all installed with the same number out of the box, & I am on a rather large domain; however, my computers are the only ones that are available to me.

you need to get the name of the computer you are using as the manager and point all your serves to that one.

Would love to see a supplementary video on using backburner & distributed bucket rendering, so as to speed up still frame rendering :)

Thanks heaps for the great info so far!

I have 2 p.c.’s, one is running 64 bit, the other 32. They cannot find the other as a server. Is it because of this 32-64 difference or is there something else at play.

scratch that… found the answer. 32-bit cannot be used as a backburner server if submitted by a 64 and 64 cannot be used if submitted by a 32. Instead, they will only render on same bit servers.

    love the site!

I´m really familiar with cluster enviroment, and my questions is… Can you use different versions of OS between nodes.. ? example.. I want to perform a net render but I would like to have Linux like OS on the nodes and on the front-end… launching jobs from the Windows pc to the cluster… is it possible ? untill today we know that is possible if all the enviroment it’s the same OS version ( working just for Wintel machines)…
    cheers from Argentina…

just to clarify, the ’server’ computers dont necessarily need 3ds max, just the backburner program set up as described in the video

Actually, all server nodes MUST have 3ds Max installed if you want to use those machines to render. But you do not need to license the server nodes. This has been one of the legendary benefits of 3ds Max over the years. You don’t have to pay for render node licenses. Just install the software as usual but don’t license it.

Regarding the 32bit vs 64bit versions of Max, you CAN send a job from a 32bit machine to a 64bit farm(nodes). When you click render after checking the Net Render checkbox, go to the advanced button and select the radio button next to “Send Job As:”

You need only send a job as 64bit if your scene uses more than 2GB of RAM to render AND there are 64bit Windows machines with enough RAM and the 64bit version of Max installed.

Well that’s funny, he’s got the same question as me AND in the same country, HA! Yeah, wanna have an Ubuntu farm sourced from Windoze 32bit. I THINK it’s possible from the comments, so we shall see.

By the way, your video is really, really understandable. I watched it only once and never had to review–that’s huge. Awesome work man.

    Hi,

Some questions, can i use my frends home computers as render nodes with this software? Those computers are lokated around my town, and on various types of broadband connections.
How much network bandwith is required to get a useble working envirement?

Very cool explanation of back burner I learned a new thing (split frame) nice tip.

    I have a question.
I am running Max and backburner on a VM (virtual machine). on a physical box everything runs great. I am wondering if it is possible to run on a VM. I keep getting the following error after submission. Unknown error while loading application. I check the system>advance tab>environment variables>path: this states the correct path which is suggested to fix this problem.

the other question is. Is there another application like back burner which does the same thing?

    Hi,
How do you define your maps to be on network? Can you talk about that a little bit?

    Thanks in advance.

Alex: Shift-T its Asset tracking window. If your on a network you want to save to a network location. So make it so it a shared folder that you can see from all your machines. This way they can see the textures as well as the max file as well as rendering out files. If you just say c:\Renders\ and it is not shared you will have to retrive all the files from all the machines from this location. but if is Network\c:\renders\ it should be save to one location and the same is true when referring to this for textures

CGartist - the trail version is all you need to run backburner.

F.J. try starting your Server and Manager up while using the batch Render option see if this solves the issue.

CGartist - I told all you need is the Serial Number from your stand alone and submit it the backburner on each machine.

The only thought that comes to mind is is needs to be the same Max version, But I am not sure. It also could be conflicting Backburner lic. (there are several out there. So if max 7 and lunching from there. it might be using a different burner than the one that is with 2009. I really don’t know. You can always post to another site like CGtalk, This is a rather old link, has good if but, I been on other sites looking for information to my issues. I hope this helps, if not try cgtalk and see what they have to say.

    Hello David.

I am on a small network at the moment, but this is information that I am going to need in the near future for a larger network.

I have both computers setup in the renderfarm.
I can view both computer in the Monitor for [All Servers]
BUT, when I am in the “Network Job Assignment” and I connect to the servers.
I am only seeing the one that I am running on, not the other one in the network.

How can I get all the servers to show up here?

When I connected the other computer to the server, it showed that it was connected to
This machines IP Address, so that is done.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?
    Thank you so very much.

    Wayne Barron

Martin Check out CGtalk and post your question there. there might be some more user that come across this situation.

Backburn has lots of errors that are tough to understand. since they are so vag.

this site is also very informational on the errors you will receive:

    http://www.cguu.com/3dsmax/3dsMAX8/backburner/s1-3854938.html

Wayne: make sure you dont have conflicting bit issues. (32-bit vs 64 bit) if you have a 32 bit machine and a 64 bit u might see them through the network but most like you wont see them when you render.

You can convert to a 32bit render from a 64bit app. This might help.
I would suggest that you post your problem on CGtalk as well. There more people there that might be able to solve the problem.
