Software : CATIA / Digital Project

Description : In this CATIA / Digital Project video we will introduce advanced replication and PowerCopies and describe why they are useful for architectural design. We will give a brief overview of wireframe geometry and modeling (points, lines, curves, planes) . We will introduce and briefly describe the role of Geometrical Sets and Bodies in model management and organization. This is the first video in a series of three.

Topics Covered:

  • What are PowerCopies?
  • How are PowerCopies used?
  • Wireframe Creation
  • Basic Wireframe Modeling (Point, Lines, Curves, Planes)
  • Introduction to Geometrical Sets
  • Introduction to Bodies

How does Catia compare to something like GC? I know that certain architectural designs are interested in this kind of design. I was just interested in knowing which would be best to place my efforts in learning? Thanks

First, a single CATIA/DP license for architectural design will run you around $20,000 with another $2,000 or so in subscription fees per year. The GC Discovery Subscription is only $250/year and you get a full version of Microstation ($4,000) with it. This base license of CATIA/DP also doesn’t include the Knowledge Advisor and Product Knowledge Template workbenches which will run you another $30,000 or so. These workbenches are essential for scripting, which GC has out of the box. That said, CATIA/DP is a much more robust and feature rich application than GC on it’s own. The user interface in CATIA/DP is a bit more refined and when used in conjunction with the knowledge workbenches described above the capabilities are very similar to the automatic replication functionality in GC. Both applications allow for the creation of user-defined features (PowerCopies), which is a huge feature missing in Grasshopper. In the end learning one over the other is more a function of the availability of the tool, they are quite similar conceptually. We’ll be posting additional videos in both applications soon.

sorry to ask this,, but, can v request for a series of videos which explain the step by step basics to advanced features of digital project…(for example..modelling complex curtain systems,,building info modelling in DP,,etc)…..THANK U IN ADVANCE…!!

$20,000!!! How many architects use that program? I was checking some websites of many international firms, they still use Rhino, 3dmax and revit…. but Catia. I think this is most usefull for fabrication, specially for GC or big structural firms… I think… but not to usefull in architecture… at least someone explain me the contrary. I think Rhino, 3dmax and revit are very usefull for D, DV and C phases, even for fabrication.

Hector… yes, only a handful of firms use it on complex and high-profile projects. The advantage that it has over all of the tools that you mentioned, aside from Revit, is that it can be used by large distributed teams for building information modeling, but unlike Revit it’s difficult to create drawings without a ton of customization. On the other hand, it’s parametric modeling functionality is more robust than Revit. We’ll post additional videos on using CATIA/DP as a BIM tool.

The thing is,…. is there a personal learning edition of Catia ?????

I love the tutorials, but only if I can replicate and adapt them in locally a learning logical.
Otherwise It’s just informative, since I will never get my hands on the damn thing.
