Software : CATIA / Digital Project

Description : In this CATIA / Digital Project video we will show how Ordered Geometrical Sets and Bodies can be used to organize geometry. We will use sketch, wireframe and solid modeling tools to create individual frame members. Finally, we will use the PowerCopy command to speed up the creation of a complete frame. This is the second video in a series of three.

Topics Covered:

  • Creating and Working with Ordered Geometrical Sets
  • Creating and Working with Bodies In a Set
  • Wireframe and Sketch Modeling
  • Basic Solid Modeling
  • Creating and Instantiating a PowerCopy using Bodies In a Set

    Hi Steve,
I am learning Catia and i like this program! But i have some questions:
1.Can i model a fast sketches (renderings) in catia for client presentation (just for the first stage of the project) or it will be better to use another software for concept modeling ??
2.If i have only Catia can i make all architectural construction and MEP staff just in Catia or i need GT?
    3. What do think about GC ,Revit,Archicad and Catia for arch. work what is the best choice?

    Regards, Roman

    1. Personally, I think it’s better to use a program like Rhino, Maya, or 3ds Max for early concept models, but CATIA can be used to refine an initial concept and used at an early stage. I’ve never used CATIA for rendering, but it has a workbench (Photo Studio) and you can always export the geometry for rendering elsewhere.
    2. By GT, I assume you mean Digital Project? DP has a few advantages when it comes to architectural modeling. The Architecture & Structures workbench included with DP has libraries of parametric architectural components that can be reused without modeling them from scratch. It also includes functionality that allows you to add construction specific attributes (metadata) to objects and supports IFC. The Systems Routing for MEP is good for modeling, but still lacks a strong library of pre-built components (similar to Revit MEP). The main drawback to CATIA/DP for architecture is the lack of out-of-the-box support for drawing production, which is a major limitation at the moment.
    3. If you’re only concerned with modeling and coordination, then CATIA/DP is a great option. If drawing production from the model is required then ArchiCAD, Revit and GC (with Microstation/Bentley Architecture) are probably better options.

you’re amazing, how much does it take you to buy all those programs, inventor and 3ds max are pricey and CATIA is $40,000 a seat. anyways I’m always amazed at your modeling ability. You said it’s better to use a program like 3ds max or rhino to do conceptual design, but how about the imagine and shape and freestyle workbenches in CATIA v5 r18 and above? thanks

Thanks! Yeah, it’s pretty pricey, but it can do a lot more than those individual programs. And yes, you’re right… the freestyle (non-history based NURBS modeling and analysis) and imagine and shape (subdivision modeling) workbenches are very powerful and flexible alternatives to Rhino and 3ds Max. The only issue you would run into is the inadequacy of the documentation and lack of a large user community for support. So I tend to lean on these other applications, mainly because I know them better.

Thanks for sharing these. Possible to post work files for beginners to follow?
