Software: Autodesk Maya 2009

Description: In this Maya video, I’ll quickly discuss and demonstrate how some of the animation tools in Maya can be applied to various design processes. In this case, we’ll use the Blend Shape deformer and generate tangible, blended geometries from two topologically identical primitives.

Topics Covered:

  • Creating and manipulating a polygon primitive
  • Using animation tools to create a Blend Shape deformer
  • Generating editable geometries from the Blend Shape animation

    Great tutorial! These are good tools to know when implementing design processes in specific software. I’m curious how this method compares to using the snapshot method in 3ds Max?

    If it interesting there is a good web site about MEL architectural scripting
    http://data-tribe.net/wework4her/

    I think will be better to make arch tutorial about scripting in Maya for architects.

    Hi, I wonder if you can do similar stuff with 3DS MAX..? What would the commands be called there…blend shape etc?

    great! and I also wish to know the same or similar ways possible in 3D max or Rhino.

    in 3dmax u can use morph modifier to do the same thing

    @Hylos

    Yes, in 3D Max you can use the morph modifier to accomplish essentially the same task and Dave has posted some great videos on using that technique in 3D Max. It’s important to us, however, to show similar techniques in different software platforms for those that are more familiar with one package over another and also as a method of introducing people to new modeling environments.

    nice, but that trackpad sound is really annoying imo

    Nicely executed tutorial. I would like to see more on actual architectural examples. Plus, more on material, rendering and animation for architecture. Thank you.

    Thanks, we’ll try and get some of that up.

    Just wondering if Maya had the ability to blend surfaces like Rhino does by taking the tangent of two different curves or surfaces and joining them smoothly according to tangent/trajectory… maybe there is a plugin for this?
