Update and a New Link

Juat wanted to post and let everyone know that more videos are on the way soon. I have been out of town and it has been a bit tricky to post new material.

ArchDaily

For now here is a link to great architectural design blog, http://www.archdaily.com .  They feature great buildings from both large and small firms, and they almost always post drawing! I figure ArchDaily can be a good source for the challanges section of the forum.

More soon,

Dave

Design Challenges on The Forum

So this question was posted on the forum:

Hi, I was perusing a popular Arch forum and came across this question:

“Hello. Now that revit 2009 is out. Is there any1 out there that knows if its possible to create data for shop drawings for the likes of Gherys’ Bilbao titanium skin facade?”

I thought it would be a cool challenge.

1. How would you go about doing something like this in Revit (If it is possible) as in true shop drawings for all those panels, scheduling them etc… Or is this something that can only be done in a customized environment or Generative Components type deal?

2. On the easier side can we see a modeling demo in Revit and also 3ds max.

So…… This has prompted a new section on the forum “Design Challenges”. There is already a bunch on conversation in the forum here so I won’t go to far into it here. But, the basic idea is post a “Challenge” and anyone and everyone can give it a try.  Hopefully people respond with models and the processes exaplianed for making the models  in 3ds Max, Rhino, Maya, Revit, Inventor, Digital Project, Generative Components, Grasshopper, Studio Tools, Modo, Z Brush, MuddBoxx, and on and on……. I hope that not just architects submit solution.  The goal is that we learn from other disciplines.

If your interested in chiming in, or posting a “‘Challenge” you can check out the forum here . Or…. just post comments on this post.

Autodesk Acquires Square 1 and Ecotect

Autodesk has officially placed them selves in the analysis market. They had already bought green building studio but now with the acquisition of an amazing program like Ecotect I think they will really start to contribute great things to the analysis market. First, Robert Aish and now Dr. Andrew J Marsh quite the all start line up.

Grasshopper Examples Posted on the Forum

These are 2 of the 8 definitions posted by TAZ on the forum.   Here is an excerpt from what was posted:

“By way of example I tried to replicate with a NURBS surface the mathematically derived mesh generation script from the RhinoScript101 primer.  If you really want to have fun you can check the mesh from the script against the NURBS surface from the definition.  Obviously The NURBS geometry doesn’t handle sharp edges, creases, or singularities very well but if the resolution setting is high enough the approximation is pretty close.”

New DesignReform Forum

Design Reform Forum

http://designreform.net/forum

So as promised (and why I have been slow posting lately) DesignReform has new Forum. Anyone (after registering, damn SpamBots) can post images, files, link, questions, or whatever you want.

The Discussion Boards are sorted by procedure then the tool. For example the main category “Modeling” has within it 3ds Max, Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit and so on and so forth. If anyone would like more softwares or Categories added please post it here as a comment or email me and I’ll add it right in.  Also, if anyone is interested in being a moderator please let me know.

If you have any comments or suggestions on how the forum could work better please post them.

Hope everyone finds it helpful,

Dave

Explicit History is Now Grasshopper

Rhino Grasshopper

So……. Explicit History has been re-branded as Grasshopper. I am also glad to say that David Rutten did not just change the name. He has also TONS of new functionality. This programs was amazing before now it’s even better. Further more this is only release 0.3 i would imagine they have plenty more on deck for future releases.

Design Reform Forum?

In the next few weeks I hope to re-launch the forum section of this site. In general it has only been used for students to post work and for me to give feed back. My interest is in making it much more of a discussion rather than me answering questions (which i will keep doing).

So my question to every one reading is…. What aspect of a forum would compel or dissuade you to contribute? Is it interface, categorization (technique vs software) or you just don’t like forums?

If you have any thoughts on this post or an example of a forum that you found particularly useful or fosters good conversation please post it in the comments of this post. Hopefully I can get some good feedback and put into the design of the new forum.

Thanks,

Dave

Rhino PanelingTools Plug-in Update

McNeel just released an update to the Paneling tool. This looks like a great plug-in for Rhino. I have not had a chance to use it yet but i plan to install it soon and test out the tools. From what i can see on the McNeel site, this tool is used for dividing surfaces for panelization. Another great aspect to this tool is that most if not all of the commands are available through RhinoScript.
