Grasshopper - David Ruttens ’s Shift Tutorial

Software : Rhino 3d and Grasshopper (Explicit History)
Level : Beginner
Description : In this Rhino / Grasshopper video tutorial we rebuild the shift tutorial provided by David Rutten on the Grasshopper blog. I hope to do one of these per file David has posted up.  As simple as the interface is to understand when one comes at the software for the first time this can be a bit overwhelming.  I just want to help make the dissection process as simple as possible . Please have a look in the forum for more Grasshopper files and images.

Topics Covered
-Divide curve by Number
-XForms
-Using the Shift component

Grasshopper Examples Posted on the Forum

These are 2 of the 8 definitions posted by TAZ on the forum.   Here is an excerpt from what was posted:

“By way of example I tried to replicate with a NURBS surface the mathematically derived mesh generation script from the RhinoScript101 primer.  If you really want to have fun you can check the mesh from the script against the NURBS surface from the definition.  Obviously The NURBS geometry doesn’t handle sharp edges, creases, or singularities very well but if the resolution setting is high enough the approximation is pretty close.”

3ds Max - Sketch Modeling the Beijing Olympic Stadium by Herzog & de Meuron

Disclaimer: Just to be clear I am in no way trying to reduce the complexity and elegance of this project.  This project has far more thought than just random slices /patterning in a form. What I am putting forward is a technique with which one could quickly go about modeling a similar pattern in 3ds Max.

herzog de meuron Stadium

herzog de meuron Stadium Sketch model

Software : Autodesk 3ds Max
Description : I’m going to start this post by saying this is not something I will do regularly but i was compelled in this case to give it a shot .  A user on the forum (This was the first post on the new forum) asked how they might model the new Beijing Stadium by Herzog de Meuron in 3ds Max. The technique shown is meant to be a design modeling technique.  I also have to say it was not completely successful, but i wanted to post an attempt.  A form that resembles the stadium was modeled then sliced randomly to get edges in an editable poly.  Those edges are then chamfered and extracted to then be shelled.  In this video the slice plane is used within the element sub-object level. Thinking about it a bit more the quick slice option might have been more suitable for the exercise. If anyone has a suggestion on how they might go about it (any software) please feel free to post it up. Follow the Forum thread here.

Revit - Scheduling Curtian Panels with Conditional Statements

Revit Scheduling With Conditional Statements

Description : This Revit Architecture 2009 video tutorial covers how to use conditional statement when scheduling curtain panels.  The techniques put forward in this video are done in an effort to avoid making different families for one curtain system.  By using techniques like these, one can manage variable parts within one Revit Family while making it easier ti manage a schedule.  This video is part of a series I am working on, in which i hope to show ways Revit can be used for quantity take off (going back to my days as an estimator, this is so much easier). Here is a link to the source files on the forum

Topics Covered
-Scheduling shared parameters
-Calculated Values in Schedules
-Scheduling with conditional statements
-Using Parameters to Identify Family Type

New DesignReform Forum

Design Reform Forum

http://designreform.net/forum

So as promised (and why I have been slow posting lately) DesignReform has new Forum. Anyone (after registering, damn SpamBots) can post images, files, link, questions, or whatever you want.

The Discussion Boards are sorted by procedure then the tool. For example the main category “Modeling” has within it 3ds Max, Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit and so on and so forth. If anyone would like more softwares or Categories added please post it here as a comment or email me and I’ll add it right in.  Also, if anyone is interested in being a moderator please let me know.

If you have any comments or suggestions on how the forum could work better please post them.

Hope everyone finds it helpful,

Dave

3ds Max - Delete Mesh Modifier

Modifier : Delete Mesh
Works on: Mesh, Poly - All sub objects
3ds Max Description : Delete Mesh provides parametric deletion based on the current sub-object selection level in the stack. The possible choices are faces, vertices, edges, and objects. Apply the Delete Mesh modifier to delete the geometry specified at that sub-object level.

3ds Max - Bend Modifier

Modifier : Bend
Works on: All Geometry Types
3ds Max Description : The Bend modifier lets you bend the current selection up to 360 degrees about a single axis, producing a uniform bend in an object’s geometry. You can control the angle and direction of the bend on any of three axes. You can also limit the bend to a section of the geometry.

Explicit History is Now Grasshopper

Rhino Grasshopper

So……. Explicit History has been re-branded as Grasshopper. I am also glad to say that David Rutten did not just change the name. He has also TONS of new functionality. This programs was amazing before now it’s even better. Further more this is only release 0.3 i would imagine they have plenty more on deck for future releases.
