Software - Magics

magics magics 2

This is a program i used quite a bit while i was in school. I threw some crazy .stl files and it always fixed them. It’s a bit pricey so i haven’t been able to get a copy at work but we’re working on it. Many of the rapid prototyping machines require “water tight” models. Even though i can clean my models up bunch by modeling cleanly there are times when you are going to need this program. if your spending $3000 on a model you don’t want to run the risk of it coming back all messed up. (i don’t get paid to say this stuff, just sharing a resources) If you can try to down the trial version and give if a shot. Magics can pretty much boolean anything you throw at it. When i download the demo I’ll make a video tutorial showing how to use the fix wizard.

FDM - Fusion Deposition Modeling

FDM Print example

This post is a work in progress so please feel free to post comments.

Similarly to what I’m doing to software I’m going to build a list of various fabrication techniques on this blog the. The first I’m focusing on is FDM or Fusion Deposition Modeling. Usually my explanation is “it’s a machine that deposits abs plastic and th fuses it as the bed on which it is printing moved down” I know defining things with the same words is kind of lame bu in this case i think it makes it a bit clearer. Also we have one of these machines at work. For the most part the resolution on the machine we have is pretty good. One of the draw back is the speed. The machine prints at a decent speed but for complex part you have to soak then in a solvent to dissolve the support material.
